RE: Forest River (Rockwood and Flagstaff) Quality?

I guess I should have been more specific. What I meant was if you find the pup you want then make sure and buy from a dealer with a good reputation for standing behind the product they sell. Regardless what some on here might say any make or model can have problems but if your dealer is not going to stand up for you and work with you to get the problem fixed then you are screwed. Even if you have a good pup but have a small issue arise and the dealer is terrible about fixing it then you will not be happy.

RE: Forest River (Rockwood and Flagstaff) Quality?

I still say the dealer is the most important thing when buying new. If you do happen to have issues with whatever brand you bought and your dealer and their service is no good then you are sunk. However a good dealer can make up for a lot even in the service area. All brands have had a problem or two but you better make sure your dealer will stand behind you on what you bought.

backing up with sway bar on

Do any of you back into your spot at the campground or in your driveway at home with your sway bar still on? Someone told me not to right after we bought the new pup with the sway bar. I hate having to get out to take it off just to back it in. Plus there has been a couple of times at state parks where I have had to make folks wait longer to get around me because I get out to take it off then get back in the van and back the pup into our spot. Just wondering what others are doing with the same set up. As always thanks.

RE: different manufacturers observations

I will say that the dealer is a big deal when you buy any type of trailer or camper. We own a Palomino and really like it a lot. When we were looking at them we were treated very well and have received excellent service after the sale, which is huge in my opinion. The problem with a lot of dealers is they see a pop up as small and not nearly as much profit as a full sized TT or 5er or better yet a MH. What a lot of them do not realize is that a lot of campers start in a pup then eventually move up to something bigger later on. If they treat you good on the pop up deal they have a much better chance of selling you something else later but they just will not look at it this way. Our dealer including the manager actually mentioned this to me when we bought ours and the way they stood behind me when we had a service issue you can bet if we ever move up they will get the first chance to sell me the next one we buy. Just a thought about dealers. They are not all made alike that is for sure.

RE: Where's He Ruide?

I think this thread is just more proof of what a great place we have here. We all truly care about one another even though most of us have never met. I think that is the way it is supposed to be. I agree that we should make this a sticky so we can find it more easily when we want an update. Keep up the good fight Ruide we are all praying for your recovery. By the way I love all the pictures too I just wish I could post my own but I don't even have a scanner to scan some in.

RE: refriderator

In a word yes. Remember these refrigerators in our pups are not the same type they have in the bigger TT and 5ers. We always precool ours at least the night before we leave. That really helps out a lot.

RE: Electric Brakes?

I would see if you can get them to add them on as part of the deal. It can be done and you will notice a difference when towing without them. When we pulled our older Jayco without brakes you could tell a huge difference when we got the new pup with brakes. Now I know I am pulling with a van and your truck would handle it better than our van but I would still guess you can notice a difference and would be safer too. If you can get them to add them on as part of the deal then it would be a win win for everyone.

RE: Dealer called me, wants my used Starcaft!

Mike, let us know how it turns out for you. I hope you get the best deal possible. Even if you do move up to the TT make sure and drop by here every now and again to let us know how you are doing.

RE: Rollin up the ground cover

I have done this mod and love it. I use 6 inch pvc pipe under the rear bumper to store our outdoor carpet, green grassy type stuff from Wal-Mart. When it is wet just roll it up take it home and take it out and spray it off with the hose. Much nicer than putting it inside the pup. Plus for us with all of our stuff there was never room inside for a carpet in the first place. We do use it quite a bit and like having it under the awning.

RE: Want to buy popup

I think you may have a hard time finding a pup that is small but has both a slide out and front trunk. Ours is a middle of the road sized pup and has the front trunk but not the slide out dinette and it weighs in loaded at about 2900lbs. so that is not very small either. You might be better off just looking around at the different models and you may find something you really like with most of what you want. If not you may need to get a large one if you have the tow vehicle for it. Just a thought. Either way good luck. Looking at all the units can be a lot of fun. Try to take notes on the ones you like so you can sit down later and compare them so that will help you decide which one will work better for you.

RE: Where's He Ruide?

Ruide, Take care of yourself. I have been in and out a lot this summer but I always look forward to your posts. As others have said our prayers are with you. You will be back out in that pup before you know it.

RE: Outlets Not Working On Battery

Jacdanboy has it right. The only power the battery will supply is 12volt. Your regular plugs are just like home you need electicity to run them or a generator.

RE: Sway Bar

I will second everyone else so far. With a short wheel base like the Jeep the sway bar will help out. We have one for our van and love it.

RE: Difference Between Tent and Pop-Up?

The differences are like night and day. We have 4 kids and love our pup. All the others have said it pretty well here so far. I like the suggestion to take your wife to a dealer and let her look at a pup. If you add on a few options a pup can really be very nice and comfortable. That to me would be the biggest thing I can say is just that you will be much more comfortable and that will lead to more fun to be had by all.

RE: electric brakes

I have pulled both with and without brakes and I must say it really does make a huge difference. If you are in a position that you can afford to add them to your pup and put the controller in your tow vehicle then I would recommend it to you. Some pups that do not have brakes on them do already have the proper axles to where you can add them to it. Others you will need to replace the whole thing. Either way you go be safe and good luck. I wish more manufacturers would just make them standard on all pups. It really never hurts to have them.

RE: New guy looking for advice

Yes, you can ask them to throw in the tow hitch and brake controller for your vehicle as part of the deal. A lot of dealers are more than willing to do this to sell a unit. You can probably still get a few dollars off the pup as well. Also if you put down $2K your loan should not be for more than 5 years at most I wouldn't think.

RE: Rockwood Roof Won't Go Up

I can tell you it can be done. I know others on here have replaced pulleys to fix the lift system. I am not sure how to do it but I am sure others will chime in with an idea of how to get it done. From past posts I do not believe it is terribly expensive to fix it if you do it yourself.

RE: New guy looking for advice

As far as the price goes you can almost always find some haggle room. It may be as small and the dealer throwing in the hitch and brake controller for the tow vehicle or it may be up to as much as 25% off but either way you can usually haggle some. Best of luck and welcome to the forum. Do not be afraid to ask a question or two if you have one. This is a great place for information and to meet nice fellow pup owners too.

RE: thinking about buying a pop up

I have a family of 6 and we camp in a pup and have a great time. Ours is not the biggest pup in the world either but our van handles it well and it works for us. I did not get the potti/shower option so I could have the extra seating and extra bed space we needed.

RE: What are you towing with and what is your MPG

Well I noticed a couple of other pup owners chiming in here too so I will throw my 2 cents as well. With our set up I get between 16 - 18 mpg while towing. Someday we may move up to a TT or 5ER but for now with the price of gas I am glad we have what we have.
